What does the Bible say about Names? Learn more

Holy Scripture about the name change of Israel - One who prevails with God

Now that Jacob had returned from Paddan-aram, God appeared to him again at Bethel. God blessed him, saying, “Your name is Jacob, but you will not be called Jacob any longer. From now on your name will be Israel.” So God renamed him Israel. Genesis 35:9-10 NLT

Meaning of Jacob: Supplanter; Substitute

Meaning of Israel: May God prevail; Who prevails with God

Prayer to prevail in life by trusting in Jesus

O LORD, there is none like You to help, between the mighty and the weak. Thank You for transforming the lives of supplanters like Jacob and giving them a new name that reveals Your personal care and the intimate relationship You have with individuals who love You. I come in the mighty name of Jesus, the name that is above all names, for strength that I too may be an Israel who prevails in life by trusting in Your Son who gives us the victory. Holy Spirit, lead me to someone today who feels defeated and needs to know the secret of prevailing in life by looking to Jesus who makes us more than conquerors over sin and self-destructive habits. In His wonderful name. Amen
