Spiritual Gifts in the New Testament & Their Purpose in the Church

Below is a list of spiritual gifts revealed in the New Testament and Bible verses that explain the purpose on why God gives spiritual gifts to believers in the body/church of Jesus Christ.

Gifts vary in the body of Christ - Romans 12:6-8 NIV

All believers have different gifts based on the grace given for...
  • Prophesying
  • Serving
  • Teaching
  • Encouraging
  • Giving
  • Leading
  • Showing mercy

List of gifts - 1 Corinthians 12:8-10 NIV

  • Message of wisdom
  • Message of knowledge
  • Gift of faith
  • Gift of healing
  • Gift of miraculous powers
  • Gift of prophecy
  • Gift of distinguishing between spirits
  • Gift of speaking in different kinds of tongues
  • Gift of interpretation of tongues

List of overseers in the church and types of gifts - 1 Cor. 12:28-30 NIV

First there are Apostles, second Prophets, third Teachers who are given...
  • Gifts of miracles
  • Gifts of healing
  • Gifts of helping
  • Gifts of guidance
  • Gifts of different kinds of tongues

The greatest gift is LOVE -1 Corinthians 13:1-3 NIV

  • If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing.

Gifts are given for equipping, building up and maturing God’s people to the fulness of Christ - Ephesians 4:11-13 NIV

  • So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.

Gifts are given to serve each other - 1 Peter 4:10-11 NIV

  • Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms. 11 If anyone speaks, they should do so as one who speaks the very words of God. If anyone serves, they should do so with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen.
